Linear Progression: How to Add Weight Workout to Workout
Linear progression is a simple progression method: when you successfully complete the prescribed work, increase the load the next time you perform that exercise. It usually means adding weight while keeping the exercise, sets, and repetitions the same.
It works particularly well for beginners because strength can improve quickly enough that increasing load from one exposure to the next is often realistic. Eventually progress slows, and a different progression method becomes more appropriate.
The rule
Choose a repeatable exercise and a fixed set and rep prescription. Start with a load you can complete comfortably, then apply one rule: complete the prescription and add a small amount of weight next time.
Here is the complete process for a squat prescription of 3 sets × 5 reps:

The word linear describes the planned progression of the training load. It does not mean your body becomes stronger at a perfectly linear rate. Nothing needs to change while the progression continues working.
Decision guide
Use the rule below to decide what to do after each workout.
- You completed every prescribed set and repetition. Add a small amount of weight the next time you perform the exercise.
- You missed the prescription once. Repeat the same load next time. One failed workout is not a reason to change programs.
- You complete the repeated load. Continue progressing normally.
- You repeatedly fail the same load despite adequate recovery and rest. Reduce the weight by roughly 5–10%, then build back up. As you approach the previous sticking point, use smaller increases if possible.
- You stall again near the same load after a sensible deload. Stop forcing workout-to-workout increases and move to a slower progression method. The progression rate has become too fast.
- The planned jump is too large. Use a smaller increment. The goal is not to increase weight as quickly as possible; it is to use the smallest useful increase that allows progression to continue.
Sleep, food, stress, technique, rest periods, and ordinary day-to-day variation can all produce an isolated poor workout. A deload gives you several successful exposures below a stalled load; it is useful, but it is not a permanent solution.
Set up the exercise
Start conservatively
Start with a weight that leaves several repetitions in reserve. For a new exercise or beginner program, around 3 RIR is a reasonable starting point. The first sessions should not be maximal.
Use practical load increases
A useful starting point is about 1–2.5 kg for upper-body compound lifts, 2.5–5 kg for lower-body compound lifts, and the smallest practical increment available for smaller exercises. These are programming defaults, not mandatory percentages: a 5 kg increase may be easy when deadlifting 60 kg and unrealistic when overhead pressing 40 kg.
As an exercise becomes harder, reduce the size of the jumps. Small, repeatable increases are more useful than large increases that repeatedly cause missed reps.
Keep effort interpretable
You do not need to train to failure for linear progression to work. Let effort increase gradually as the weight progresses, but do not force maximal grinding indefinitely. If the load rises while RIR falls, the progression has less room remaining even when you are still completing the prescription.

When it works well
Linear progression works best when performance is improving rapidly, the exercise can be loaded in small increments, the same movement is performed regularly, a fixed set and rep target makes sense, and success or failure is easy to judge. Squats, presses, rows, deadlifts, pulldowns, and many machine movements are straightforward candidates.
It is not limited to barbells. A machine chest press or dumbbell row can use linear progression when the available increments are appropriate. It becomes less convenient when the smallest available increase is too large relative to the exercise; in that situation, building repetitions before increasing load is often more practical.
Compared with double progression
Linear progression keeps repetitions fixed and increases load. Double progression usually keeps the load fixed while repetitions increase within a range, then adds weight after the top of the range is reached. Neither method is inherently superior: linear progression works well when small, frequent load increases are realistic, while double progression is often more convenient when load increments are large, progress is slower, or an exercise works better across a rep range.
For a major strength lift that benefits from planned lighter and heavier exposures rather than continuous increases, wave progression is another option.
When to change course
Linear progression ends when you can no longer reliably recover and improve enough to add load at the required frequency. This usually happens gradually: successful increases become occasional failed workouts, then more frequent retries, then deloads and stalls near the same load.
Before moving on, check whether load increases are too large, rest between sets is long enough, technique or exercise consistency has changed, training volume is appropriate, sleep and recovery are reasonable, and you have repeated the load after an isolated failure. If those are addressed and progress still repeatedly stalls, you have not stopped being able to gain strength—you need a method that works over a longer timeframe.
Linear progression and progressive overload
Progressive overload is the broader principle: training demand increases as your capacity improves. Linear load progression is one way to accomplish that, but progress can also come from additional repetitions, the same performance at lower effort, more productive weekly volume, or other structured progression methods. Linear progression is simply the most straightforward version: keep the target fixed and add weight whenever you meet it.
Linear progression and RIR autoregulation
Linear progression tells you what load should change next. RIR autoregulation lets training respond to current readiness. They can be combined: complete the fixed work around a chosen RIR, then increase the planned load next time when successful.
